You can definitely DIY this type of installation. We prepared this guide to help you get started, from the tools you’ll need the process you’ll need to follow.

What You Need to Install Artificial Grass for Dogs

We have everything you need to install pet turf here at Artificial Turf Express, from artificial grass to infill and accessories like staples, turf adhesive, and nails.

The only thing we don’t stock is base material, but you can easily get that from your local rockery or landscaping shop.

Here’s what you’ll need to install artificial grass for dogs:

• Artificial Turf
• Base materials: Decomposed granite (easier to obtain), road base (stronger, contractor-grade)
• Decomposed Granite stabilizer (if using decomposed granite)
• Drainage Layer: AirDrain or PDS Tile
• Weed killer
• Weed barrier
• Edging: Bender board or treated wood, if needed
• Sand Infill: Pet-specific or antibacterial infill
• Turf Deodorizer: Zeofill or similar (to reduce potential odors)
• Seaming Tape
• Artificial Turf Glue
• Sod cutter or shovel
• Measuring tape
• Heavy-duty roller
• Push broom
• Utility knife
• Hammer
• Large nails (5-6 inches)
• Optional: Wheelbarrow
• Optional: Power broom

How to Install Synthetic Turf for Pets

Prepare the Area

• Clear existing vegetation: Remove grass, weeds, roots, and debris. Dig down 3-4 inches to fully remove vegetation.
• Apply weed killer: Thoroughly treat the soil to prevent future weed growth.
• Install Edging (if desired): Install bender board or treated wood edging to separate the turf from surrounding areas.

Remove Existing Soil

• Apply your base material evenly or shape to build a crown. Use motorized compactor to level it, or adding more layers if needed (total compacted depth of 3-4 inches is recommended).
• Lay down the drainage tiles if desired: Make sure they fit snugly with no space in between to prevent sagging, wrinkles and drainage issues.

Install the Artificial Turf

• Unroll and acclimate: Let artificial turf rolls sit in the sun for 30 minutes to soften them for easier handling.
• Lay out the turf: Arrange the turf rolls, ensuring the grass blades face the same direction. Cut to size with a sharp utility knife.
• Seam the turf: Use seaming tape and glue according to connect multiple rolls.
• Stretch and Secure: Stretch the turf tight to avoid wrinkles and secure it with nails along the perimeter, approximately every 2 inches. Hammer down the nails so the heads are flush with the turf.

Apply Infill

• Add turf deodorizer (optional): Apply a thin layer prior to the sand for odor prevention.
• Layer sand infill: Spread the antibacterial sand infill evenly using a push broom. Aim for around 1 pound of sand per square foot.
• Power broom (optional): Use a power broom to help the sand settle into the turf fibers.

Finishing Touches

• Use a Power Broom: To life the grass blades and help the infill settle evenly.
• Hose Down: Lightly rinse the turf to help the infill settle and remove any dust.
• Let it settle: Allow the artificial grass to settle overnight before use.
