You’ve finally laid out the best artificial turf for your lawn. But what’s this? You’re seeing some creases on your synthetic grass! Why did that happen to your DIY installation, and what can you do about it?

What Causes Creases in DIY Artificial Turf Installations?

Artificial grass is supplied in large rolls packed in cardboard tubes. Because of this packaging method, the turf backing memorizes the contour of the tube. So, it naturally develops creases and wrinkles.

However, some low-quality artificial grass can be warped during the manufacturing process. This is why it’s always better to buy the best artificial turf in San Jose than be stuck with low-quality material for your home.

Sometimes, though, other factors cause the creases—for example, improper or hasty installation. But don’t worry too much. It’s easy to fix, and you don’t even have to be an expert at it!

How to Fix Artificial Grass Creases

If you suddenly see creases on your artificial turf, fix them with these simple tips:

• Apply something warm onto the affected area. You can even lay it out under the sun for an hour or two. This will soften the backing. When it’s soft enough, stretch out the grass to flatten out the crease.

• Brush out the best artificial turf with a stiff-bristled push broom. Focus on the affected area. Consistently apply pressure as you brush so you can push the ruffle down.

• If the crease pops up near the edge of the turf, stretch the edge until it’s straight again.

• Roll up the artificial grass tight, similar to how you received it. Let it stay this way for 1-2 days so you can stretch the backing. Then lay it flat again for another hour or two so it gets back its original shape. Reinstall it afterward.

How to Prevent Creases on Synthetic Turf

As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you plan to add more artificial grass to your property, it’s better to prevent creases from the start. Here’s how:

• Let your grass adjust.

After completing your preparations, unroll your grass flat across the installation area. Or, if the weather is excellent, lay it outdoors under the sun.

Let it settle there for at least 2 hours. If you can, let it rest for 24 hours for better results.

The backing will slowly adjust back to its original flat shape. After that, you can proceed with the installation and cutting.

• Stretch the grass tight.

One of the most useful tools for DIY synthetic turf installers is a knee kicker or carpet stretcher.

This handy tool ensures that artificial grass is flat and stretched out. Then, you can fasten it down with the best artificial grass accessories like glue or staples.

This allows the turf to lay flat and avoid developing bubbles that lead to creases.

• Secure the edges

You have a lot of options to secure your turf’s edging. You can use wood, plastic, steel, paving, or concrete gravel boards. The choice is up to you. What matters most is to make sure that the edges are secured so spots won’t crease.
