Most people believe there is no way to combat these dirty habits. They just assume there is nothing they can do about their child getting dirty while playing in forts, swinging on swing sets, and sliding down slides. Oh, but those people would be wrong!

This eventually became the general public’s consensus about artificial turf. Because of this reputation, some people are still skeptical about turf.

Drought Tolerant Artificial Grass’ New Legislation
California’s historic drought has continued for many years now, and many legislators are now looking into updating old laws regarding artificial turf. Historically, installing artificial turf was not always easy for homeowners. There were many provisions surrounding the installation process, and some locales were flat-out banning artificial turf. Metropolitan code, HOAs, as well as various other ways of oversight have protected homeowners. Recently, California State Assembly member Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) has been pushing for drought solutions and water savings. Through Assembly Bill 1164, which declares a state of urgency for the drought, Gatto has sought solutions to this potentially devastating problem. If passed, AB 1164 would forbid a city, or region from passing or implementing any type of statute that forbids the setup of artificial turf on property.

As a sport, Bocce Ball’s origins trace back to Italy. It goes all the way back to ancient Rome, and remains common within the global Italian community. Bocce ball is usually done on a standard lawn. Lately, people have began to play bocce ball on synthetic turf because it offers several advantages. Simply put, playing bocce ball on turf is far easier than natural grass.
One of the reasons for the popularity of bocce ball on synthetic turf is its low maintenance time. Bocce ball usually requires a well-manicured lawn, and because of this, turf is the best choice. Maintaining a natural lawn is expensive, resource draining, and time-consuming. Another reason that artificial turf is preferred to natural lawn for bocce is its surface consistency. Regular grass lawns can be problematic because the surface is rarely flat, which prevents the ball from rolling smoothly.

Synthetic Grass in Small Spaces: Creativity and practicality for urban environments
Some people believe that the American dream is all about owning a big property with a large backyard and white picket fence. In the present day, this is becoming increasingly less desirable, because people are opting to live less extravagant lives by favoring smaller spaces. The suburban areas are running out of space to build homes, so people are more interested in keeping things simple and economic.
We’re seeing trends where people are building tiny homes out of shipping containers, and collectively grouping themselves into their own communities. Some city-dwellers still prefer apartments and condos, but are applying creativity in their interior and exterior designs. Naturally, this means that there is becoming less of a demand for landscaping tools and services. This allows people to focus more of their time on being physically active and engaged in their family and community. The newfound desire for personal freedom has resulted in many home owners exploring the use of synthetic grass in small spaces, as well as many other contemporary landscape products.

The Environmental Impact of Artificial Turf
In California, watering natural lawns in homes and businesses amounts to about seven percent of the state’s water supply. In fact, about 51 percent of the state’s water usage from families is from home lawn upkeep. This is very taxing to the state’s total water usage. If residents switched from natural lawns to artificial turf, the state’s water use be cut by almost 25 percent. Why does this matter? Simply because the state’s severe drought is causing water costs to drastically rise. As a homeowner, avoiding these heavy water costs is important. When combining this factor with the cost of living in California, it is clear that your wallet is taking heavy, unnecessary hits. This article explores not only the water savings from converting to a synthetic lawn, but also the true environmental impact of artificial turf.
The Difference Between Vintage AstroTurf and Modern Artificial Turf
Artificial turf is one of the landscape design items that has become far more sophisticated over the last few years. Many people remember the original AstroTurf synthetic lawn, which were popularized in the 60’s and 70’s. It was featured in sports and TV shows like The Brady Bunch. While customers who bought AstroTurf enjoyed some of the benefits of having artificial grass, they had what we have today. One of the biggest drawbacks to the old stuff was that it definitely looked fake. Modern artificial turf looks like real grass without any of the hassle. Watering, mowing, and other maintenance are no longer an issue.
When it comes to backyard design, it doesn’t always have to be just one option or the other. We love the look of mixing, matching and blending styles, tones and textures to create diverse and versatile outdoor living spaces.
One of our favorite combinations is blending warm-toned decking with the deep greens of artificial grass. This is a great way to create a cosy yet modern space that’s easy to maintain and useable all year round.
In a wise decision made five years ago, five South Bay high schools included artificial turf in a $70 million project to upgrade its athletic fields and the water saving is significant.
The Field of Dreams at Fremont High School is no longer grass. The grass has been replaced with artificial turf on the football field, a footprint of just over 1.6 acres. One baseball field also has artificial turf, while another is half grass and half artificial.
More than just a practical feature, artificial turf has taken on a whole new dimension in the field of design and creativity. Traditionally a replacement for grass or used as a fun feature in the yards of aspiring amateur golfers, synthetic turf has taken on an entirely new element as an accent piece.
Artificial Turf Express has made installing artificial grass so easy, that do-it-yourselfers have made an art out of the fake grass. Placed under boulders, beside ponds, or as a frame around gardens or floral designs, synthetic turf has added a new facet to the beauty of yards. For the decorator in you, cut and piece artificial turf in between pavers to add color and creativity to your walkway. For a bolder appearance, space different sized sections of artificial turf in asymmetrical patterns adjacent to tiles and pavers of different textures and colors. The result is a freeform appearance of a very colorful and artistic design that is sure to have the neighborhood talking.
You see it every day, California drought. Hear it everyday, California drought. Sixty percent of California is in “exceptional drought” and unfortunately, it does not appear that there is a high chance of that condition being alleviated this winter.
Kevin Werner, the western regional climate services director at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, says, “groundwater has been significantly, and in many cases, severely depleted and that fact is unlikely to change even if we get a normal rainfall year.”
12 Steps to Installing Your Own Synthetic Lawn
The look of a lush green lawn is an enticing aspect of any home. But the severe drought, water restrictions, environmental considerations, and issues with maintaining a picture perfect lawn have more homeowners looking to install artificial turf in place of grass.
Installing artificial turf grass is a simple, yet, deliberate process that when followed properly, leaves the homeowner with a beautiful end product and a feeling of satisfaction for doing it himself. The return on investment will quickly prove itself with a dramatic savings in water, fertilizers, and landscape fees. With the proper supplies, a perfect synthetic lawn can be installed following these measures:
Jessica Calefati recently reported that homeowners associations can no longer fine residents who fail to water their lawns during droughts under legislation sponsored by a San Jose lawmaker.
Reports earlier this year that a San Lorenzo association threatened in writing to retaliate against a man with a burned lawn inspired Assembly Bill 2100. But reports of those threats — the focus of at least one television news story — might have been inaccurate.
We know that there are many ‘would-be’ artificial grass owners who have long considered undertaking an installation at their home, only to talk themselves out of it for fear of the cost being prohibitive. Sadly, many of them have reached this conclusion without truly looking into the costs as well as the benefits. At Artificial Turf Express, we cater to contractors and the do-it-yourself crowd.
Artificial turf has gained grudging acceptance on front lawns from Sacramento to San Diego, driven by years of drought and residents’ shrinking patience for water-guzzling natural grass.
Artificial grass has come a long way since fall of 1966, when The Houston Oilers AFL football season began on more than 125,000 square feet of removable Astroturf. Installed in the Houston Astrodome and used for both football and baseball fields, this marked the first time that synthetic turf was used in pro sports. The use of artificial turf became more mainstream in the 1970s as some baseball and football stadiums in both the United States and Canada began to embrace the cost saving benefits of this new technology. Sports arenas located in the colder climates of the Midwest and Northeast, requiring the all weather capability offered by an indoor facility, utilized these new products extensively during that period.
From those big brown eyes to those giant paws, the newest addition to your home can become an added challenge. “Puppy-proofing” can potentially be a long-winded process that takes up much time, effort, and money. In fact, some may even compare it to the excruciating process of baby-proofing a house. However, it definitely has its added benefits, including preserving the condition of your house and key parts of your property, including your furniture and your yard. Another significant benefit is to, of course, ensure utmost safety for your puppy. Though the process may entail several tasks, there are a few easy changes that can be done to significantly aid in creating a safe environment for your new puppy. One of these changes is the switch from a natural lawn to an artificial grass for dogs. This relatively simple task can turn your backyard into a comfortable, durable, and safe place for your puppy to play on and enjoy all year long.
Synthetic turf, playground, landscape, and other recreational surfaces are installed at hotels, office buildings, shopping malls, traffic islands, apartments and condominiums, patios, sun decks, terraces, swimming pools, golf courses, golf tees and putting greens, etc. A good appearance and long term durability are required by these installations. Additionally, synthetic turf is also increasingly being used instead of natural grass, for both water conservation purposes and because of concerns about pesticides and some fertilizers used for natural grass.
For a city famous for innovation, things move slowly in San Francisco. Haven’t we been debating the proposed soccer fields at the Beach Chalet in Golden Gate Park for eons?
We have. A search of The Chronicle’s archives finds a soccer field improvement proposal from 2001.
Is synthetic lawn pet friendly?
Absolutely! The drainage holes allow the urine to drain through the product to the base. Depending on the amount of rain in your specific area, homeowners may need to hose off these areas to help the drainage process. With dogs, it is also recommended to use something like Simple Green® or a vinegar and water solution to keep the area clean. Please refer to our Care and Maintenance Guide for additional care instructions for pets.
No mowing and saves water, too? Synthetic turf indeed sounds like the perfect lawn for parched landscapes.
Recent technological innovations make today’s fake grass look better than the real thing. Dogs like it. Neighbors can’t tell the difference. And in the grips of prolonged drought, a no-water green space has its appeal.
As drought levels continue to rise, home and business owners in hot, arid climates seek alternatives to water-intensive natural turf grass. Water restrictions are in place for many areas of the country, and some drought-stricken areas like here in California are offering rebate programs for those replacing their natural grass lawns with water-wise plants or artificial turf landscaping.
Lawn irrigation is one of the largest culprits of residential water usage. The typical natural grass lawn requires 55 gallons of water per square foot per year, or 82,500 gallons for a modest 1,500 square foot lawn.
Synthetic grass is much easier to care for than natural grass. You do not have to drag a heavy bag of smelly fertilizer around. There is no need to use harsh chemicals that could raise allergies. And the biggest bonus of all – you don’t have to waste your weekends trying to start the lawn mower!

According to New York Times sportswriter Hillel Kuttler, League Park will “reopen in turn-back-the-clock glory, featuring a baseball diamond aligned as it was during its major league heyday. The field will be made of artificial turf to reduce postponements in Little League, high school, college and recreational baseball games. It may also be used for soccer and football games, as well as concerts and other events.” (Read the entire article here)
Last week, we had a customer (I’ll call him Bob) come to us with an interesting idea for a Mother’s Day gift. His mom’s always loved to garden, but doing yard work had become harder and harder over the years. A couple of years ago she had moved from her longtime home into a smaller town home with a compact, shaded courtyard. Bob wanted to make sure his mom had plenty of hands-on space for plantings and some grassy areas for reading and entertaining friends.
With the Go Green movement really taking stride, it is very important to do everything you can to do your part as well. When updating your home to be more environmental friendly it is very important to consider your lawn. Many of Americans do not realize how many chemicals they are putting into their lawns to make it greener; natural lawns are no longer very natural. Now that spring is creeping up on us it is time to update your lawn, help the environment and give yourself a yard you can enjoy. Below I have listed several reasons why installing a synthetic turf lawn will make your home more “Green.”
One of the biggest concerns when making the decision to purchase a synthetic green lawn is how their pets will adapt to the change. No need to worry though because you’re animal will not even notice the difference – only you will! The improvements this will add to your pet’s life are so subtle, it will not even notice that it’s been running around on synthetic grass rather than the real thing. The synthetic lawn is also very durable and will not be damaged by your animal.
If you are shopping for Do-It-Yourself (DIY) outdoor carpeting for your patio, play area or even apartment rooftop, it can be somewhat of a challenge. Why? You want comfortable and soft artificial grass to make you feel right at home, but some synthetic turf brands are itchy and scratchy to the touch.
Artificial Turf Express synthetic lawns offer landscaping solutions, fixing the pesky problem of uncomfortable artificial turf grass. With Artificial Turf Express, you will have fake grass choices that are comfortable, soft and even plush to the touch. In fact, this artificial turf feels (and looks) like the real thing, natural grass. It’s the perfect, comfy solution so you and your family can sit, lay, slide and play without the itchy-ness or tough landings.
When it’s today’s advanced artificial turf, the green alternative to wasteful (and expensive) lawn watering, pesticide and weed poison usage and the weekly gas and oil combustion pollution added by millions of lawnmowers across the country.
Among the most frequently asked questions we hear from DIYers are:
“Crumb rubber infill? What’s that?”
“What’s it do and why would I need it?”
“Where the heck do I get it?”
When you are considering purchasing a DYI or synthetic lawn project to improve your home landscaping, there are many different terms that you will come across. In previous blog posts, we offered simple definitions for many of the words you will encounter. To help you understand the terms farther; this blog post is going to apply those terms for you.
Once you have picked out the type of synthetic grass you want to install to better the appearance and quality of your lawn it’s time to measure and cut the lawn so it fits properly. Cutting the turf will be a very simple process if you follow the DYI tips and steps.
Oh, weeds! The dreaded subject of any lawn care person. Weeds always seem to pop up everywhere and anywhere, but with a synthetic grass lawn you will not need to worry about weeds any longer.
Yes, even with the installation of your own synthetic lawn, you will still spot a few weeds sprouting up in your lawn, but not to worry they will not grow big. When you install your own synthetic grass you will see that there is a sand infill to help disperse any moisture in your lawn. Well this sand infill can actually provide a hydroponic environment, which is friendly for weeds to grown in. The synthetic grass also has a backing which is strong enough to keep the roots of the weeds from growing into the soil.
Artificial turf – you have probably seen it in sports stadiums or even on your neighbor’s lawn and didn’t even realize it wasn’t real. Maybe you’re just starting to do the research and or wonder whether it’s a good if is it alternative for your yard? Well, just as recently as 10-years ago, the answer may have been no. However, with the advancements in artificial turf products and thanks in part to the new developments by artificial turf manufacturers, synthetic lawns are becoming an ever present alternative for homeowners around the country.
Artificial lawns are one of the few landscaping products that continue to get better and better with new technology, especially over the past few years. While pavers and stamped concrete have made small strides in product development, many of today’s artificial grass products are now manufactured especially for homeowners that care about the look and feel of the products as opposed to sports performance.
