Barry Ann Friedman’s small midtown lawn is holding up to the drought amazingly well, with grass several shades darker than some of its parched-looking neighbors.
It’s also fake, and illegal under a city ordinance adopted three decades ago that prohibits synthetic turf in Sacramento’s front yards. Sitting on her front porch earlier this week, Friedman said she didn’t know that when she paid around $3,300 two years ago to have a contractor install the closely cropped faux grass.

Last month we spotlighted some stars nervy enough to waste water by making sure their resort-like back yards were the model of perfection. By examining the way some Beverly Hills stars kept their lawn plush and their pools filled, you would never know California was suffering the worst drought on record in 60 years.
Artificial Turf Express would like to recognize that not all stars dismiss the reality that we are in a severe drought and need to converse water. Some celebrities have gone to great extremes and shared some practical solutions in their crusade to save water. Here are some of our favorite examples of stars saving water:

Jessie Alamedes just spent over $400 removing a foxtail from her dog’s paw. These grass-like weeds with needle-tip heads burrow deeply into dogs’ paws, noses, ears, mouths, tails, and armpits after being caught on their fur. The results are excruciating pain for the animal, and a hefty medical bill for the owner.
Foxtails and other weeds are just many of the nuisances that a backyard or dog kennel has that can be detrimental to the health and well-being of a beloved pet. Mix in a rainy day or broken sprinkler on top of dead or dying grass, and you have the mixture for a muddy mess.

When watching a fantasy film, you suspend disbelief and become part of an impossible happening. High-tech special effects can fool the brain into accepting a whole different reality. When my practiced eye was fooled by the new artificial turf, I knew it had finally come of age.
I am not an easy sell.
When the first “plastic grass” came on the market decades ago, there was no way to suspend disbelief. It was obviously fake. The earlier products denied oxygen and moisture exchange to the soil underneath. It literally smothered to death, losing vital microbe populations. We also found that trees could not survive within the fake grass because the roots died. Water would pool on the surface if the ground underneath wasn’t perfectly graded. And then there was the wear and tear of kids and bikes and pets.

A bill that would allow Californians who live in homeowner associations to replace their lawns with artificial turf, without fear of fines, easily passed its first hurdle in the state Assembly on Wednesday.
By a 7-0 vote, the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee approved the legislation, which is authored by Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, D-San Diego, and sponsored by the San Diego County Water Authority.

When it comes to backyard design, it doesn’t always have to be just one option or the other. We love the look of mixing, matching and blending styles, tones and textures to create diverse and versatile outdoor living spaces.
One of our favorite combinations is blending warm-toned decking with the deep greens of artificial grass. This is a great way to create a cosy yet modern space that’s easy to maintain and useable all year round.

Synthetic grass is much easier to care for than natural grass. You don’t have to drag a heavy bag of smelly fertilizer around. There’s no need to use harsh chemicals that could raise allergies and are harmful to mother nature. Let’s not forget the double benefit of conserving water and lowering that water bill. And what may be the biggest bonus of all – you don’t have to waste your weekends trying to start the lawn mower!
Having said that, there’s still some work you need to do to keep your lawn clean and safe. Here are a few artificial grass maintenance tips you can follow to promote the longevity of your lawn:

When drought shaming first started last summer, it was a state sanctioned activity. California passed a law that could fine residents up to $500 per day for wasteful activities that include hosing down driveways and overwatering lawns. (Recently, the state governor proposed to up that max daily penalty to $10,000.) Now, as the state enters its fourth year of drought, public attention has begun to shift toward some of the more obscene examples of water excess: Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, whose sprawling green lawns and glittering pools are literally oases in a desert, Ritz hotels that water-mist their wealthy patrons (wtf?), and certain wonderful corporations that source bottled water from drought-stricken regions.
